What you get in Apple Notes
The download: Apple Notes files, zipped, with the steps for Apple Notes inside.
In the download
- One file per notebook, numbered in import order
- Photos, files and checklists inside the notes
- Original created and edited dates
- Large notebooks split so Apple Notes takes them in one go
Opening it in Apple Notes
- 1Unzip the download.
- 2In Notes on your Mac, choose File, Import to Notes, and pick the file starting with 01.
- 3Notes puts it in a folder called Imported Notes. Rename it to the notebook's name, then import the next file.
The parts that usually go wrong, done
Notebooks stay apart
Notes puts each import into a folder called Imported Notes. One file per notebook, numbered in import order, lets you rename each folder before the next import, so your notebooks stay separate.
Photos, files and checklists inside
Images and files stay in the note where they were, and Evernote checkboxes come across as checklists. Apple Notes can be choosy with some PDFs; the report in your download lists them so you can check.
Dates you can sort by
Each note keeps the date it was created and last edited in Evernote, not the day you imported it.
Pick what to bring
Browse your notebooks and notes like folders. Bring everything, a few notebooks, or single notes, and leave the rest behind.
See it before you convert
Open any note and preview how it will look in Apple Notes, attachments and checklists included.
Rather do it yourself? Notes on a Mac can import an .enex file by itself. With many notebooks, the trouble is that everything lands in folders called Imported Notes that no longer say which notebook they were.
How it works
- 1
Export from Evernote
In the Evernote desktop app, export each notebook as an .enex file. Many notebooks, or on Linux? The free tool evernote-backup exports them all at once.
- 2
Add the files and pick
Add your .enex files, browse notebooks and notes like folders, and preview how a note will look in Apple Notes. Tick whole notebooks or single notes, then press Convert.
- 3
Download and open in Apple Notes
You get a zip with the import steps for Apple Notes inside. Unzip it and follow them.
The conversion runs in the cloud, so you can close the tab while it works. We cannot connect to your Evernote account: you add the files you exported, and nothing else is read.
First, get your notes out of Evernote
Evernote exports notes as .enex files, and only from its desktop app. Here is the route for each case.
With the desktop app
Evernote for Mac or Windows
- Open Evernote and let it finish syncing.
- In the sidebar, right-click a notebook and choose Export notebook.
- Pick ENEX as the format, keep tags and dates ticked, and save.
- Repeat for each notebook you want to bring.
Selecting notes by hand exports at most 100 at a time. Whole notebooks have no such limit, so export by notebook.
Many notebooks, or on Linux
evernote-backup, free and open source
A command-line tool for Mac, Windows and Linux that downloads your whole account and writes one .enex file per notebook. After installing it, run:
evernote-backup init-dbto sign inevernote-backup syncto downloadevernote-backup export notes/to write the files
It is not ours. Install steps are on its GitHub page.
Only on the web or your phone
Evernote Web and the phone apps
Neither can export. Install Evernote on a Mac or Windows computer, sign in, wait for your notes to sync, and export from there. No computer with either? evernote-backup signs in to your account itself and works on Linux too.
