Move your Evernote notes
to UpNote
Add your Evernote export, pick the notebooks or notes, and download files UpNote takes in one go: one per notebook, named so each becomes the right notebook, with the two usual reasons UpNote turns a note away handled before you import.

What you get in UpNote
The download: UpNote files, zipped, with the steps for UpNote inside.
In the download
- One file per notebook, named so UpNote names the notebook right
- Files over UpNote's 20 MB limit set aside, with a line in the note
- Very long notes split into parts UpNote accepts
- Tags, dates, photos and checklists kept
Opening it in UpNote
- 1Unzip the download.
- 2In UpNote, choose File, Import Notes, Evernote.
- 3Select all the files at once. Each becomes a notebook.
The parts that usually go wrong, done
Big files and long notes handled
UpNote turns away a note with a file over 20 MB or with a great deal of text. Big files are set aside with a line in the note saying where they are, and very long notes are split into parts.
Notebooks named right
UpNote names each notebook after the file it imports, so every file is named after its Evernote notebook.
Tags, dates and checklists kept
Tags, created and edited dates, photos and checklists come across with each note.
Pick what to bring
Browse your notebooks and notes like folders. Bring everything, a few notebooks, or single notes, and leave the rest behind.
See it before you convert
Open any note and preview how it will look in UpNote, attachments and checklists included.
Rather do it yourself? UpNote imports .enex files itself, and that works for a small, tidy notebook. With years of notes, one oversized attachment or one very long note is enough for a note to be rejected, and you find out after the import.
How it works
- 1
Export from Evernote
In the Evernote desktop app, export each notebook as an .enex file. Many notebooks, or on Linux? The free tool evernote-backup exports them all at once.
- 2
Add the files and pick
Add your .enex files, browse notebooks and notes like folders, and preview how a note will look in UpNote. Tick whole notebooks or single notes, then press Convert.
- 3
Download and open in UpNote
You get a zip with the import steps for UpNote inside. Unzip it and follow them.
The conversion runs in the cloud, so you can close the tab while it works. We cannot connect to your Evernote account: you add the files you exported, and nothing else is read.
First, get your notes out of Evernote
Evernote exports notes as .enex files, and only from its desktop app. Here is the route for each case.
With the desktop app
Evernote for Mac or Windows
- Open Evernote and let it finish syncing.
- In the sidebar, right-click a notebook and choose Export notebook.
- Pick ENEX as the format, keep tags and dates ticked, and save.
- Repeat for each notebook you want to bring.
Selecting notes by hand exports at most 100 at a time. Whole notebooks have no such limit, so export by notebook.
Many notebooks, or on Linux
evernote-backup, free and open source
A command-line tool for Mac, Windows and Linux that downloads your whole account and writes one .enex file per notebook. After installing it, run:
evernote-backup init-dbto sign inevernote-backup syncto downloadevernote-backup export notes/to write the files
It is not ours. Install steps are on its GitHub page.
Only on the web or your phone
Evernote Web and the phone apps
Neither can export. Install Evernote on a Mac or Windows computer, sign in, wait for your notes to sync, and export from there. No computer with either? evernote-backup signs in to your account itself and works on Linux too.
