What you get in Obsidian
The download: Obsidian vault, zipped, with the steps for Obsidian inside.
In the download
- A ready vault: each notebook is a folder
- Notes named by their title, links between notes as [[links]]
- Photos and PDFs show inside the notes, under their own names
- Tags, dates and the address of clipped pages kept as properties
Opening it in Obsidian
- 1Unzip the download.
- 2In Obsidian, choose Open folder as vault and pick the Evernote folder.
- 3Already have a vault? Drag the Evernote folder into it.
The parts that usually go wrong, done
Attachments that show up
Photos and PDFs are kept under their own file names in one Attachments folder and embedded where they were in the note, not left as loose files nothing points to.
Links between notes come along
Notes are named by their titles, unique across the vault, and a link from one Evernote note to another becomes a [[link]] Obsidian follows, when the note it points to is converted too.
Web clips keep their source
The address of every clipped page is kept as a property next to tags and dates, so you can still find where it came from.
Pick what to bring
Browse your notebooks and notes like folders. Bring everything, a few notebooks, or single notes, and leave the rest behind.
See it before you convert
Open any note and preview how it will look in Obsidian, attachments and checklists included.
Rather do it yourself? Obsidian's free Importer plugin is worth a try for a small notebook. Where people get stuck is scale: exporting notebook by notebook, then checking thousands of notes for attachments and links that did not come across.
How it works
- 1
Export from Evernote
In the Evernote desktop app, export each notebook as an .enex file. Many notebooks, or on Linux? The free tool evernote-backup exports them all at once.
- 2
Add the files and pick
Add your .enex files, browse notebooks and notes like folders, and preview how a note will look in Obsidian. Tick whole notebooks or single notes, then press Convert.
- 3
Download and open in Obsidian
You get a zip with the import steps for Obsidian inside. Unzip it and follow them.
The conversion runs in the cloud, so you can close the tab while it works. We cannot connect to your Evernote account: you add the files you exported, and nothing else is read.
First, get your notes out of Evernote
Evernote exports notes as .enex files, and only from its desktop app. Here is the route for each case.
With the desktop app
Evernote for Mac or Windows
- Open Evernote and let it finish syncing.
- In the sidebar, right-click a notebook and choose Export notebook.
- Pick ENEX as the format, keep tags and dates ticked, and save.
- Repeat for each notebook you want to bring.
Selecting notes by hand exports at most 100 at a time. Whole notebooks have no such limit, so export by notebook.
Many notebooks, or on Linux
evernote-backup, free and open source
A command-line tool for Mac, Windows and Linux that downloads your whole account and writes one .enex file per notebook. After installing it, run:
evernote-backup init-dbto sign inevernote-backup syncto downloadevernote-backup export notes/to write the files
It is not ours. Install steps are on its GitHub page.
Only on the web or your phone
Evernote Web and the phone apps
Neither can export. Install Evernote on a Mac or Windows computer, sign in, wait for your notes to sync, and export from there. No computer with either? evernote-backup signs in to your account itself and works on Linux too.
